First full day in Capetown
Last night got settled in our very nice rooms at the Victoria and Albert Hotel overlooking the waterfront harbor & walked to dinner at Mozambik. It was delicious and the staff were so friendly & fun.
Met for the included breakfast at 8:15 this morning because our guide was coming at 9. What a spread! Loads to choose from at buffet and ordered entre from menu.
Our guide the next 3 days is Samo. He described himself as looking like Danny Devito. Danny wishes he looked that good.
Full of info, history, and stories. Very personable. Our first stop was Table Mountain and a cable car ride to the top. The cable car is one of only 3 in the world with a rotating floor. Table Mountain overlooks Capetown and has lovely trails that you can wander. There can be loads of fog and mist obscuring it but we lucked out with relatively clear views. Then an hour + long drive to tour the City itself. We saw District 6 where non-whites were removed from their homes during Apartheid. Lunch at “Truth Coffee”, the best coffee house, roasters “in the world”, a drive through a stretch that I thought was a cross between San Francisco & New Orleans before stopping at “Honest Chocolate” where they make a variety of chocolates from cocoa beans, yum. Finally, we visited the Slave Lodge Museum; very tragic & sobering but informative. We had dinner at another traditional African restaurant- including singers and dancers for tips. Jubilant but a bit too intense for Sue. We returned to the hotel where our waiter Goodlaw served us for the second night in a row.
